Rystix Timbacre (Oak)

Virtual Staging

See It Before
We Build.

Before any physical work began, we created a 3D virtual model of the pergola. This allowed the client to make confident decisions before construction started.

Visualise the pergola in its actual space.

Adjust dimensions, placement, and roof alignment.

Make confident decisions before construction.

“Seeing a realistic 3D version first gives our clients peace of mind and ensures the finished pergola looks exactly as they imagined.”

The Client’s Challenge

Hout Bay properties are often exposed to changing weather conditions, including wind and moisture from the coast. In this case, the pergola also needed to be attached to the house, which meant alignment and load transfer were critical.

Primary Concerns

Long-term stability

Structural integrity against seasonal Cape winds.

Proper anchoring

Secure foundations to prevent shifting over time.

Visual Alignment

Matching the existing roof rafters for a seamless look.

Timber Durability

Selecting materials that age well in coastal salt air.

Design Approach & Structural Decisions

This pergola was designed as a lean-to structure, attached to the house wall and supported by ground-anchored columns along its length.

Precision Alignment

Aligning all pergola rafters precisely with the existing roof rafters on the house wall, ensuring clean load paths and consistent visual proportions over the full 10.5m length.

CCA H3 Treated Pine

Selected for its structural suitability in outdoor and ground-contact environments.

Visual Spacing

Proportions were kept consistent to avoid visual sag or uneven spacing over the long span.

Load Distribution

Column positions set to match the rafter layout for optimal structural behaviour under load.

Footings, Fixings & Stability

Each column was anchored into concrete footings with a steel shoe, holding the timber 50mm above ground level to prevent moisture absorption.

Columns

152mm × 50mm posts

Main Beam

228mm × 50mm

Battens

50mm × 38mm

Fixings

Stainless steel screws throughout

Brackets

Hot-dip galvanised rafter brackets

Wall Fixings

Stainless steel coach screws

The Installation Process

A meticulously planned seven-day timeline from initial setup to final stability checks.

Critical Step

“Sealing of the timber was intentionally delayed by five days to allow excess moisture to escape, ensuring better absorption of the sealant.”

01

Accurate setting out for column and rafter alignment

02

Casting concrete footings and installing post shoes

03

Installing beams and rafters to match the positions of rafters on the house

04

Fixing battens evenly across the pergola length

05

Final checks for alignment, spacing, and stability

The Final Result

The completed pergola provides a functional shaded area that integrates seamlessly with the home. The oak-toned finish gives the space a warm, natural look without overpowering the property.

More usable throughout the day

Visually balanced across the full length

Structurally solid & well-anchored

Coastal condition ready

Why This Pergola Will Last

  • Ground clearance on all posts
  • Proper structural sizing of beams
  • Stainless steel and galvanised fixings
  • Delayed sealing for better performance
  • Premium Rystix Timbacre wood sealant

“In coastal areas like Hout Bay, anchoring matters just as much as the timber itself. By lifting the posts off the ground, you remove a lot of future problems before they start.”
